Germany

Oliver Schell is a small, family-run estate based in the dramatic, steep vineyards of the Ahr Valley in Germany, one of the country’s most distinctive regions for cool-climate red wines. Working from the village of Rech, Oliver continues a long local tradition of viticulture, focused on careful vineyard work and an uncompromising attention to detail.

The Ahr is known for its slate soils and precipitous slopes, and these conditions define the wines. Oliver Schell specialises in Spätburgunder, alongside small amounts of Frühburgunder and Riesling, crafting wines that are precise, mineral, and quietly powerful. Everything is farmed by hand, often on terraces that cannot be mechanised, with a gentle approach in the cellar to preserve purity and site expression.

At Oliver Schell, the focus is firmly on origin. The vineyards are worked personally, yields are kept low, and the wines are given time to develop naturally. The result is a collection of elegant, finely structured wines that capture the tension and character of the Ahr, shaped by both the landscape and the dedication of the grower behind them.
